US and Iran make progress in peace talks in Switzerland

US Vice President JD Vance has said that peace talks in Switzerland with Iran created a good foundation for a successful final deal to end the war.

He was speaking to media in Switzerland after Mr. Vance and Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf wrapped up a lengthy round of initial talks aimed at solidifying a permanent end to the war between their countries.

Echoing same view in a social media post, Iran’s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, Pakistani and Qatari mediation have delivered major progress to end Lebanon War.

Mediators Qatar and Pakistan have also said the first round of negotiations has ended with encouraging progress. In a joint statement issued today, they said, the parties had agreed to a roadmap towards reaching a final deal within 60 days.

A communication line had been formed to avoid incidents and miscommunication with the aim of safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Both sides also agreed to the creation of a de-confliction cell between the US, Iran and Lebanon, facilitated by the mediating countries, to end military operations in Lebanon. JD Vance also suggested that the US administration could agree to unfreeze Iranian assets for purchases of US soy, corn and wheat.

The US Treasury has issued a 60-day license waiving sanctions on Iranian oil as part of the interim agreement to end Iran war. The license authorises the production, delivery and sale of Iranian oil. It will last through 21st August
