UK: Andy Burnham becomes Makerfield MP after Keir Starmer’s resignation




n UK, senior politician Andy Burnham has formally become the Makerfield MP as he took oath in the House of Commons today after Keir Starmer’s resignation.

 

Widely regarded as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer, Mr. Burnham gained significant momentum after returning to Westminster by defeating a Reform UK candidate in a pivotal by-election in Makerfield.

 

Earlier he had officially launched his campaign to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party, following Starmer’s resignation today as both Prime Minister and party leader. 

 

The race to determine the next occupant of Downing Street is set to begin next month. Labour’s National Executive Committee will start accepting nominations from the 9th July. In response to the resignation, Mr. Burnham expressed gratitude for Starmer’s dedication during a difficult term.

 

In a social media post, he noted that Starmer’s decision marks the beginning of a transition, and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way.
