President Droupadi Murmu to visit Kuno National Park and review cheetah reintroduction project
President Droupadi Murmu will visit Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district today. During her visit, she will go on a safari in the park from 6:30 AM to 8 AM and review the progress of the cheetah reintroduction project. She will also interact with members of the Sahariya tribe who work as Cheetah Mitras, cheetah trackers, local forest staff and tourist guides to learn about their experiences and role in the project.
After the visit, the President will leave Sheopur for Gwalior and later return to New Delhi on a special Indian Air Force aircraft.
Earlier yesterday, President Murmu was welcomed at Kuno National Park by Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, district in-charge minister Rakesh Shukla, Member of Parliament Shivmangal Singh Tomar and senior forest department officials.
The President visited the Cheetah Command and Control Centre and viewed an exhibition on the cheetah project. Officials informed her that India currently has 52 cheetahs, of which 49 are in Kuno National Park, while three have been shifted to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. She was also briefed about the monitoring and tracking system used for the animals.
Officials told the President that water points have been developed every two kilometres inside the forest to support the cheetahs, and water is supplied whenever required. She was also informed about the activities and adaptation process of cheetahs brought from Botswana and Namibia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s ambitious cheetah reintroduction project in 2022 by releasing eight cheetahs brought from Namibia into Kuno National Park on his birthday. Later, more cheetahs were brought from South Africa and Botswana. Due to conservation and breeding efforts, the cheetah population in Kuno has been steadily increasing, which is considered a major achievement of the project.
