President Droupadi Murmu to visit Kuno National Park and review cheetah reintroduction project

June 22, 2026

President Droupadi Murmu will visit Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district today. During her visit, she will go on a safari in the park from 6:30 AM to 8 AM and review the progress of the cheetah reintroduction project. She will also interact with members of the Sahariya tribe who work as Cheetah Mitras, cheetah trackers, local forest staff and tourist guides to learn about their experiences and role in the project.

After the visit, the President will leave Sheopur for Gwalior and later return to New Delhi on a special Indian Air Force aircraft.

Earlier yesterday, President Murmu was welcomed at Kuno National Park by Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, district in-charge minister Rakesh Shukla, Member of Parliament Shivmangal Singh Tomar and senior forest department officials.

The President visited the Cheetah Command and Control Centre and viewed an exhibition on the cheetah project. Officials informed her that India currently has 52 cheetahs, of which 49 are in Kuno National Park, while three have been shifted to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. She was also briefed about the monitoring and tracking system used for the animals.

Officials told the President that water points have been developed every two kilometres inside the forest to support the cheetahs, and water is supplied whenever required. She was also informed about the activities and adaptation process of cheetahs brought from Botswana and Namibia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s ambitious cheetah reintroduction project in 2022 by releasing eight cheetahs brought from Namibia into Kuno National Park on his birthday. Later, more cheetahs were brought from South Africa and Botswana. Due to conservation and breeding efforts, the cheetah population in Kuno has been steadily increasing, which is considered a major achievement of the project.

India must become a global leader in AI, not just a consumer: Mukesh Ambani

June 21, 2026

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani on Friday said artificial intelligence and energy self-sufficiency must become national missions, describing them as critical to India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.

Addressing shareholders at Reliance Industries’ 49th Annual General Meeting, Ambani said India should move beyond being a consumer of emerging technologies and emerge as a creator and global leader in AI.

“I firmly believe that India should not be a mere consumer of AI created elsewhere. It must become a creator, adopter and a global leader in AI,” he said.

Emphasising the strategic importance of technology and energy independence, Ambani said maximum energy self-sufficiency and AI self-sufficiency are essential for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat.

He said Reliance is accelerating investments in artificial intelligence and new energy businesses, which are expected to drive the group’s next phase of growth while contributing to national development.

As part of its AI strategy, Ambani highlighted Reliance Intelligence, which he described as the company’s newest growth engine aimed at building a profitable AI infrastructure, platform and services business for consumers, enterprises and governments.

According to Ambani, Reliance has already laid the groundwork for its AI ambitions through partnerships with global technology companies including Google, Meta and Nvidia, and is now entering the execution phase.

Drawing parallels with Reliance Jio’s role in expanding broadband connectivity, he said the company’s next mission is to make artificial intelligence accessible to everyone.

“A decade ago, Jio promised broadband connectivity to everyone, everywhere, and we delivered on that promise. Today, Reliance Intelligence promises AI to everyone, everywhere, and we shall deliver on this promise too,” he said.

Ambani urged young innovators to develop inclusive and responsible AI solutions that are affordable and accessible in Indian languages, and that empower farmers, students, doctors, workers, creators and businesses while creating employment opportunities.

Reliance’s long-term growth strategy also includes substantial investments in new energy businesses aimed at strengthening India’s energy security and supporting the transition to cleaner and sustainable sources of energy.

Providing further details on the group’s AI roadmap, Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani said the company is building sovereign AI capabilities at scale.

“This capacity places Reliance amongst the largest AI infrastructure platforms being built anywhere in the world,” he said, underlining the company’s ambition to establish one of the world’s largest AI infrastructure ecosystems from India. (ANI)

‘Build a world where every generation can lead a healthy life’: UN chief Guterres extends wishes on International Day of Yoga

June 21, 2026

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended greetings on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, highlighting yoga’s global reach and its role in promoting physical and mental well-being across generations.

In a post on X, Guterres said, “From its deep roots in ancient India, yoga has become truly universal, helping millions of people of all faiths & cultures find calm, build strength & live with purpose.”

He noted that the practice promotes mindfulness, respect, and care not only for individuals but also for society and the environment.

“It teaches us mindfulness, respect & care for ourselves, for our planet & for one another,” he added.

Extending his message on the occasion, the UN chief called for greater care for elderly populations and urged efforts to build a healthier world for all generations.

“On this Yoga Day, let’s extend that care to the older members of our human family & build a world where every generation can lead a healthy life. Namaste!” the UN Secretary-General added.

The 12th International Day of Yoga this year is observed with the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlighting the role of yoga in supporting health and well-being across all age groups.

According to UN information, yoga is considered a valuable practice for healthy ageing, as it helps maintain key physical and mental abilities that enable individuals to remain active, independent and socially engaged as they grow older.

Recognising yoga’s global appeal, the United Nations General Assembly, on December 11, 2014, adopted a resolution proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The day aims to raise global awareness about the numerous benefits of practising yoga. The resolution establishing the observance was proposed by India and received endorsement from a record 175 member states.

The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address at the opening of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, where he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action.”

“Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature,” he added.

The resolution also highlights “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health”.

The International Day of Yoga continues to be marked worldwide with events promoting physical fitness, mindfulness and holistic well-being.

PM Modi commissions three indigenous naval warships, says maritime strength key to Viksit Bharat

June 21, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenous naval warships – Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak – in Kolkata, describing the event as a major milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance, maritime strength and the vision of a developed nation.

Addressing the Tri-Commissioning Ceremony in Kolkata, PM Modi said the induction of the three naval warships reflected India’s growing capabilities in defence manufacturing and maritime security. He emphasised that all three vessels were designed and built in India, showcasing the country’s engineering expertise, industrial capacity and skilled workforce.

“A country is powerful when it is Atmanirbhar,” the Prime Minister said, adding that India is preparing itself for a self-reliant and developed future by strengthening its maritime capabilities.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the seas, PM Modi noted that maritime power is closely linked to a nation’s development, security and prosperity. He said global trade, data connectivity, critical minerals and future energy resources are increasingly dependent on the oceans, making maritime strength a key determinant of economic and strategic influence.

“The world is witness to the fact that no nation can become a major power without maritime capabilities. The sea is linked to development, security, and prosperity,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the commissioning of INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak marked another chapter in India’s maritime journey that began with the commissioning of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. He described the three vessels as symbols of India’s commitment to self-reliance, innovation and indigenous defence production.

Stressing the government’s focus on domestic manufacturing, PM Modi said India no longer wishes to remain merely a buyer in the global defence market.

“Today, India no longer wants to remain a mere buyer in the defense sector. Our military power cannot become a market for the world. My strength is not determined by being a global market; the strength of my power is determined by my self-reliance. India wants to be a manufacturer. And the day we become manufacturers, we will also be decision makers,” he said.

The Prime Minister revealed that more than 40 Made-in-India warships and submarines have joined the Indian Navy in recent years, while 45 major naval warships are currently under construction. He said this demonstrated the rapid expansion of India’s defence-industrial base and its growing technological capabilities.

PM Modi also highlighted the economic potential of the maritime sector, describing it as a major employment generator. He noted that shipbuilding supports a vast ecosystem involving steel, electronics, machinery and thousands of ancillary components, creating jobs across industries.

“India’s maritime sector has the potential to create millions of new jobs in the coming years. We see it as the employment engine of a developed India,” he said.

PM Modi pointed out that more than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) contributed to the construction of the three naval warships commissioned on Sunday, generating significant employment opportunities.

He said the government has launched a new vision for the shipbuilding sector, supported by policy reforms and measures to boost domestic manufacturing. Shipbuilding, ship repair, ship recycling and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities are now being pursued as a national mission, he added.

Referring to the ₹70,000-crore stimulus package announced for the shipping sector, PM Modi said the initiative was an investment in India’s maritime future and industrial expansion.

He also highlighted efforts to modernise ports, expand river waterways and strengthen multimodal logistics networks through initiatives such as Sagarmala, aimed at reducing trade costs and creating new opportunities in coastal regions.

On defence manufacturing, the Prime Minister said India has made significant progress since 2014, when the government prioritised self-reliance in the sector. He noted that India’s annual defence production has increased from around ₹40,000 crore in 2014 to nearly ₹1.8 lakh crore today.

Defence exports have also witnessed substantial growth, rising from around ₹700 crore before 2014 to approximately ₹40,000 crore at present, with Indian-made defence equipment now reaching more than 80 countries.

“There’s still much to be done on the journey to self-reliance. I think this is just the beginning,” PM Modi said, while expressing confidence in India’s future trajectory.

The Prime Minister also underscored West Bengal’s historic maritime significance and its potential to play a key role in India’s emerging blue economy. He said the state possesses the ports, industries, talent and skills needed to become a major hub for maritime manufacturing, logistics and coastal development.

“India is moving towards a new maritime era. West Bengal will play a crucial role in this,” he said.

Concluding his address, PM Modi said India has always viewed the seas as a medium of cooperation but recognises that strength is essential for preserving peace and safeguarding prosperity.

“Security is essential for safeguarding prosperity. And self-reliance is essential for building the future,” he said, adding that the newly commissioned naval warships symbolise a confident India that believes in its capabilities and is moving forward with renewed determination in the 21st century.

Yesterday, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect following intensive diplomatic efforts by the United States, Qatar and Iran. The ceasefire is being seen as an important step towards easing tensions across West Asia, supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran aimed at reducing regional tensions and ensuring the smooth flow of trade through regional shipping routes.

Norway bans use of generative AI tools in elementary school to prevent ‌negative impact on learning

June 21, 2026

Norway is imposing a near ban on the use of generative AI tools by elementary school pupils while also restricting their use in the education of older children to prevent a ‌negative impact on learning. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere told a press conference that using AI increases the risk that young children skip important steps in their education.

The most important thing in school is that our children learn to read, write and do mathematics, Stoere said, adding that the new standards will be imposed from the new school year beginning in late August.

Facing a broad decline in education test scores, the government in 2024 banned smartphones from schools and has given teachers back more power to enforce discipline in the classroom.

June 21, 2026

President Droupadi Murmu today attended the 36th Convocation Ceremony of Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. On the occasion, she awarded gold medals to meritorious students from different faculties. Madhya Pradesh Governor and Chancellor Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav and Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar were also present at the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, the President said that Rani Durgavati, after whom the university is named, was a symbol of courage, bravery and valour. She said that Rani Durgavati continues to inspire Indian women and will remain a source of inspiration for future generations.

President Murmu said that a large tribal population lives in the areas surrounding the university. She urged people associated with the university to work for the empowerment of tribal communities, disadvantaged groups and especially young girls.

She said that tribal communities are self-respecting and often do not speak openly about their problems. In such a situation, educated young people should stay connected with their villages and communities and help spread awareness about government schemes and opportunities.

The President said that the goal of building a developed India by 2047 can be achieved only when the benefits of development reach every section of society and every individual. She added that education is the most effective tool for the development of both individuals and society. Therefore, continuous efforts should be made for the education and overall development of tribal communities.

On June 22, President Murmu is scheduled to visit Kuno National Park, where she will interact with members of the Sahariya tribe, cheetah trackers and the park’s field team.

Supreme Court dismisses Meenakshi Natarajan’s plea over Rajya Sabha nomination rejection

June 12, 2026

The Supreme Court today dismissed the writ petition filed by Congress member Meenakshi Natarajan challenging the rejection of her Rajya Sabha candidature from Madhya Pradesh.

The Supreme Court declined to interfere with the Returning Officer’s decision rejecting her nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections over the alleged non-disclosure of a criminal case in Telangana.

A bench comprising Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice AS Chandurkar observed that once a Returning Officer rejects a nomination paper, the statutory remedy available to an aggrieved candidate is to approach the Election Commission.

The court therefore refused to grant relief and left it open for Natarajan to approach the poll panel.
